Getting to the Root of the Issue

Remember that solemn vow you made to curb your obsession with texts and emails? You know, the one where you promised not to dive headfirst into a cycle of constant checking and rechecking messages? Yeah, that one. Spoiler alert: it probably didn’t go as planned. Mine certainly didn’t-binge after binge, obsession after obsession.

The thing is, we often attack our issues head-on, focusing solely on changing our behavior without digging deeper. Sound familiar? We’ve all been there, making grand declarations to overhaul our lives:

“This year, I’m going to be a health guru!”

“No more toxic relationships for me!”

“Adios, social media; I’m breaking free!”

“That’s it, no more of that habit!”

But here’s the kicker: behavior modification alone rarely sticks because it merely scratches the surface. It’s like chopping off a branch of a tree you despise without uprooting it-it’s still there, smirking at you from the backyard the next day.

Just as a tree’s roots sustain its growth, our behaviors are often fueled by deep-rooted thoughts and beliefs. Simply cutting off behaviors without addressing the underlying issues is like trying to tame a wild tree with a tiny saw.

So, how do we tackle this effectively? By uprooting the lies we believe and reshaping the neural pathways that guide our actions. It’s about replacing falsehoods with truths, paving the way for lasting change.

Where do we find these transformative truths? Not in social media feeds or friendly chats, but in the timeless wisdom of God’s Word. Just like Jesus drew strength from Scripture when faced with temptation, we too can cultivate a firm foundation of truth within ourselves.

Let’s follow in Jesus’s footsteps by internalizing God’s Word, forging a path of obedience and freedom in our own lives. It’s about rewiring our minds with the truth that sets us free.

Father God, grant us the strength to go beyond surface changes and address the deep-rooted beliefs that shape our actions. Guide us to seek transformative truths in Your Word, just as Jesus found strength in Scripture. Help us uproot the lies we believe, replacing them with the truths that lead to lasting change and freedom. May we walk in obedience and truth, rewiring our minds to align with Your will. Amen
